It’s no wonder the Boston Red Sox took a chance on pitcher Carl Stimson (1894-1936) from Hamburg, Iowa. At a time when the average American male stood 5’6”, Stimson towered at 6’5”. Evidently his height didn’t help him much in his brief major league career. In two innings of work on two separate occasions, Stimson faced 24 batters and gave up 12 hits, walked five, hit a batter and threw one wild pitch. His career in major league baseball ended after his second outing leaving him with a 22.50 ERA.
